Super Mario 63 Redux is now open source!

You can find the source code on our GitHub repository.

FAQ:

Q: Why is it open source?
A: A few reasons.

  • We want to be transparent, and a good way of doing that is by having the code visible to everyone. Development progress can be tracked, even when we don't have anything presentable to put in a preview.
  • It introduces accountability. We're more likely to write good code if we know people can see it. Plus, people who see it might be able to point out areas to improve.
  • It allows people to contribute code to the main project, as long as it's approved by the development team.
  • It allows people to make mods easily. These mods, if popular and up to, could even then be merged back into the main project.
  • Being able to check the code means you know the code you're running is safe.
  • Speedrunners and other such glitch-hunters would have an easier time finding useful glitches, and this would allow a proper line of communication with developers as to what should be patched and what should remain.
  • If people want to read the code to learn from it, now they can!
  • We need more programmers. It's easier to bring people on board if they know what they're getting into first.

Q: What if someone tries to steal the project?
A: "Stealing" isn't really a thing in open source. The point is to make it so that anybody can use it, in more or less any way they like. If someone tried to copy it and claim it as their own, well, they wouldn't be able to get away with it, given that we have an established online presence.

Q: Can 0.2.0 be played by downloading the source code?
A: You could download the source code now, along with the Godot Engine, and play the current development build. However, it's not complete, not stable, and subject to change. Currently, this version is designated "0.2.0.alpha".
